Let's cut through the noise. While the political establishment spent this week talking about itself, Reform UK went out and won seats. Two council by-election victories in a single night — one in Bury, one in Luton — sent a message that the political realignment in this country is not slowing down. It is accelerating.
What Happened and Why It Matters
In Bury, Reform UK took a seat directly from the Conservatives with 39.5% of the vote — a swing that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. In Luton's Wigmore Ward, we took a seat from the Liberal Democrats with 32.9%, beating a well-organised Lib Dem machine on their own turf. These aren't protest votes. These are people making a deliberate choice to back Reform UK because they believe we will actually do something about the issues that matter to them.
The Conservatives lost Bury without a fight. Their vote collapsed. Voters who used to hold their nose and back the Tories because there was no alternative now have an alternative — and they're taking it. This is what a genuine political movement looks like.
The Establishment Doesn't Get It
You'll read plenty of commentary this week from political journalists telling you these results don't matter. They'll say by-elections are mid-term protest votes. They'll say Reform can't translate this into a national majority. They said the same thing before we became the official opposition in terms of first-preference votes at the last general election.
The truth is the political class still doesn't understand what is happening. People aren't angry because they've been told to be angry. They're angry because they've been watching their living standards fall, their communities change beyond recognition, their NHS deteriorate, and their voices ignored — all while being told they should be grateful. Reform UK is the only party that is actually speaking plainly about these things.
Local Representation That Works
As a Reform UK County Councillor for Preston East, I know what it means to be the voice that wasn't supposed to be there. When I knock on doors in this ward, I hear the same things being said in Bury and Luton: people feel abandoned. They feel the mainstream parties have made decisions about their lives without ever asking them. They feel that immigration, crime, and the cost of living are all getting worse while politicians talk about process and procedure.
Reform councillors show up. We fight for residents. We don't just warm seats and vote how we're told. That's why we're winning. Not through slick PR campaigns or donor money, but by actually listening to people and saying what we mean.
What's Coming in May
The May 2026 local elections are on the horizon, and the polling is clear. Reform UK is consistently polling between 26 and 32 per cent nationally — ahead of every other party. We are on track to make historic gains in county councils, metropolitan authorities, and mayoral contests across England.
These by-election wins aren't a fluke. They are a preview. The political map of Britain is being redrawn, and it's being redrawn by ordinary people who've had enough of being taken for granted. That is something worth celebrating — and worth fighting for.
